Why exploring Copenhagen by bike completely changes the experience

If you ask me, biking is without a doubt the best way to experience Copenhagen.

The city feels incredibly compact and accessible when you’re on a bike. From our hotel, almost everything we wanted to visit was within three to ten minutes cycling distance and even the places that felt “further away” were usually a maximum of fifteen minutes.

That completely changes the rhythm of your trip.

Instead of constantly planning metro routes or spending time commuting, you naturally move through the city while slowly discovering new streets, cafés and neighborhoods along the way. Copenhagen almost feels designed to be explored by bike.

And honestly, even when the weather suddenly changes — which can happen — you’re usually very quickly somewhere else again. A coffee place, museum, bakery or design store is almost always nearby.

What surprised me most is how calm cycling feels compared to cities like Amsterdam.

The bike lanes are very spacious and the overall rhythm feels slower and more relaxed. You constantly see parents biking with children in cargo bikes, friends cycling next to each other while talking or people calmly biking home after work.

Because there are fewer electric bikes and almost no fat bikes compared to the Netherlands, everyone moves more or less at the same speed, which honestly makes the entire experience much more pleasant.

You can really feel that Copenhagen was designed around biking instead of simply adapting to it later.

The city comes alive on the bike

Another thing I loved is that biking allows you to experience the atmosphere of the city much more deeply. You notice the architecture, the cafés filling up in the morning, people swimming in the canals, flowers outside apartment buildings and small corners you would completely miss underground in public transport.

It makes the city feel alive.

You can rent bikes all throughout Copenhagen very easily. Many hotels offer rentals directly, which is what we did at Bryggen Guldsmeden, but there are also several bike rental places spread throughout the city depending on where you stay.

And honestly, once you spend a few days biking around Copenhagen, it becomes very hard to imagine experiencing the city any other way.

A N A

Hello there! I am Ana. The famous travel bug has bitten me many years ago and for me the best feeling in the world is knowing that a trip is coming up. As far as I can remember I’ve been traveling back and forth from Portugal to The Netherlands due to my parents and their origin. I’ve always enjoyed talking about my travels – where I went, what I did and what not to miss. Next to this I have a great passion for photography.
